On-grid or Grid-tied System
On-grid system is the one in which solar power system is connected to the utility’s power grid. The excess power generated is sent to the utility grid and the consumer gets compensated for it. Similarly, when the system underproduces power, the consumer can draw electricity from the grid and pay for the units used. The process of giving extra power to the grid is called net-metering. Some states let you give all the power generated to the state grid and this is termed as gross metering.
Off-grid systems
As the word says it, off-grid solar power system are independent of the grid. These systems work independently and are not affected by power cuts. The system uses batteries to store all the excess energy generated during the day and use the same at night or whenever the generation is low. Here is how the system looks
A hybrid system is when your solar panels remain connected to the grid’s power lines and have a backup battery system to store excess power. The benefit of a hybrid solar system is that you will always have power in any situation. With a backup battery, the excess energy that your solar panels create (but your home does not use), will be stored in this battery. Then, when the sun is not shining, this battery will provide your power during the night, system blackouts or inclement weather
